How To: Hack Deep Freeze and Vision
-
Another resent question I have received from my fellow students is “How do I get around Deep Freeze? It isn’t something that I can just tell a person while running around the track at school during PE class. So, Eric comes to your rescue again and explains it all, but first, if you are on a school computer and your teacher has Vision installed, you may want to do some stuff before reading this article so he/she can’t see what you’re doing.
There is a couple ways of stopping Vision. First, go to C:\Program Files\Master Solution you should see a folder inside called Vision, open it and see a program called MEUCONF, open it and hit “Run Manually, and that should solve that problem.
Another way is by simple unplugging the RJ45 connector from the NIC (Or in English, disconnect the wire coming from the networking card.)
FOR WINDOWS 95/98/ME:
Deep Freeze is a VxD (Virtual Device Driver) found in C:\Windows\System\Iosubsys\persifrz.vxd.
So the only way for hacking it is using a boot-disk and deleting the file. Yes…there is more files in C:\program~1\hypert~1\deepfre~1 but those are obsolete to us. They have nothing to do with what we are doing.Note: persifrz.vxd IS Deep Freeze. Hence, deleting it will kill it completely
If you can’t boot from the floppy because your boot order is not setup that way, and your teacher has password-protected the bios, you can always 1-pull the battery out of the motherboard 2- move the “reset jumper by the bios to reset it.
FOR WINDOWS 2K/XP:
You need to delete 2 drivers and 1 service (I’m sure you can figure out the the paths)DepFrzLo.sys (kernel driver)
DepFrzHi.sys (filesystem driver)
dfserv.exe (service)
frzstate.exe (password dialog)
persis00.sys (password file and “on/off switch”)You should be good to go.
You should take Questions/Comments to the “Comments section of this post.

Well…it sounds to me that you are logged in on a limited account. First matter of business is to get on an administrative account. Getting access to an administravite account can be very easy. I will post soon a tool on “Eric’s Tools” that will be an .exe that you can write to a floppy disk and boot, it will take all the users and there passwords and put them in a .txt. There is serveral ways to gain access to an administrative account, im sure you can find a way. I will make a HOW TO post all about different methods of have to gain control
November 8th, 2005 at 12:50 pm
I am also trying to get rid of the password file in Deep Freeze. I tried to delete the files you mentioned, but I don’t know where they are?
November 10th, 2005 at 8:55 am
I will list the file location on my next post. For now though, try using search to find it. If you can’t find it that way, download Google Desktop have it index everything, and then do a search that way.
November 11th, 2005 at 8:59 am
The locations are given in the post now.

I’m sorry Alex, but I’m not quite sure on what you mean. Your english isn’t exactly the best. I think you are saying that you have a program that will unistall deep freeze, but you can’t do it because it’s running. Is that right?

As an admin with a school that uses DF and vision, sites like these really help me stop kids like you from doing what your trying to do!
thanks for all the great tips, I’ll make sure on monday to correct any of these flaws and prevent KIDS from doing what your trying to do.
March 26th, 2006 at 6:54 pm
Uh….okay. You are sounding kinda mean, which i don’t like…but anyways, if I was at your school, you couldn’t stop me. Trust me, I know how to get around anything you put in front of me.
March 26th, 2006 at 6:58 pm
oh, by the way, the article I wrote on taskkill… he he he… lets just say you can use this problem here. So tanviper really has no 100% way of securing the computers. The point of security is to discourage/slow down people, but you can’t fully protect yourself.
March 26th, 2006 at 11:34 pm
Not trying to be mean, I meant it when I said thanks.
Maybe you kids don’t understand why the computers are locked down the way they are. The schools can get in a lot of trouble when you use programs like Kazaa to download illegal files. MP3, software, and games can contain virus that can take down a network. Those same files can also install spy ware that slows down the network and/or internet connection.
I’ve heard about Microsoft and Adobe coming into a school before and fining a school district 1000’s because of the some of the things the students did. Where do you think the money is going to come from? It’s coming out of the funds that we use to replace old computers with, buy newer program with, and the funds we use to buy new desk/chairs with. Then everyone loses. Kids that do that negatively impact everyone. Districts don’t have an unlimited supply of funds. Almost every year, the funds at my district get frozen because we run out of money mid-year.
Chats rooms and web site like myspace and yahoo messenger are a breeding ground for sex, drugs and other bad things. There are grownups that prey on kids all the time with these sites. Since you’re at a public school, we have the right to block them for your protection.
Games are nothing but a waste of time. You’re there to learn, not play tribes, doom, or some Java game.
Your 100% right, there will always be a way to get around programs like DF, vision or any other program given enough time. But here is where you lose. At my school, you would get caught, have your account disabled, and then not be permitted to be on any school computers. Since your teachers would know you couldn’t be on a computer, the only way you could then do homework would be at home. You would have to do you research with books, and any projects that you NEEDED the computer for; you’d get an F. Guess who wins then?
So, is it really worth trying to get around those programs? If you’re smart, then you would say “no”. If you still want to try and get around them, then you WILL be caught. We have other tools, at my school anyway, that have be successful in nailing kids that try this very things that you’re talking about.
Here’s the bottom line. It’s a game. A cat and mouse game if you will. There will always be kids that try to do things their not suppose to. There will always be people like me that throw obstacles in their way. Will we always be successful? Nope, but it will prevent 90% of the kids from doing it. The other 10% will get theirs in due time.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have other hack sites to go to and more obstacles to erect.
oh, and by the way, we’re well aware of taskkill. We’re also aware of ways to beat it.

This came up in the moderation filter, I took a look at what you have to say, and I decided I’ll let this out for other people to see, don’t get me wrong, I’m not stupid enough to do it, because you are right, there is no point. I understand everything you say, because I work for the school (fix computers, setup security, catch people hacking, etc) So I understand where you are going. Let me say this on a last note, I didn’t want to seem rude to you, and I hope that I can help you out in anyway I can, if you want, you can email me any questions you may. Being a teenager, I understand all the ways kids come up with to get around it. If you get stuck on something, or you want to know what I would do to get around it, to get to your next step, let me know. Thanks for your comment Tanviper.
The only reason you came across rude was because of your CAPS “KIDS”
No harm done.
P.S. Leave another comment if you wish my email address.
UPDATE: Not all games are bad. Adults don’t agree, but some games can actually good educational tools.
ex. Goggle search for Kids Programming. Great, simple, easy, program that even kids can use and learn coding. They can even create games. Great way to learn some simple C++ and Visual Basics. And yes, the program is really for kids. I like playing around with it actually.
March 27th, 2006 at 10:29 am
I agree with you that some games can be educational. We have a C and visual basics class here that use simple games to help kids program. I have no problem with those types of games. They remind me of Math blaster when I was a kid. It’s the games that are brought from home, or download from the net that get them in trouble. To get those games to work, you also need to get around the filter, no big deal I admit, and install software. All of which are aganist the rules.
There are two types of kids IMO. “KIDS” are the ones that will do anything they want, including hacking your network, downloading kazaa, and vandalize your equipment. “Kids” are the one that will follow the rules (for the most part), and only do stupid little things like play online java games. One kind gets caught, and written up, and treated like a child. The other gets a tap on the shoulder, asked to get off the game site, and treated with respect.
I appreciate the offer, and even may take you up on it. =-) I see your point about coming off rude, and it truly wasn’t my intent to do so. I apologize if I came off that way.
March 27th, 2006 at 5:23 pm
Hey, no problem. Ya… I see all those types of “kids” too. The other day I caught a KID using Limewire and downloading stuff, I had to report him, I can’t say it is fun to report another peer, but rules are rules.
Ya, If you want any help, let me know.
P.S. I don’t understand why your comments keep getting into my moderation filter, I guess it just thinks you should be moderated, you bad person you
lol.

Hey mate.
I am a fellow Mac user and am happy that you have decided to switch to Apple, but, thats not what I am here to ask you. You see, one of the computer teachers that we have here thinks that Deep Freeze on an XP Pro machine is un-hackable, and he has given me permission to hack and destroy this computer at school if I can, probably thinking that it is not possible.
• Now, what I want to do is to delete deep freeze, either by booting from a Linux LiveCD (Ubuntu probably, my choice of Linux distro) and deleting those files that you have posted above, but I would need to get the file paths from you.
• The second option that you gave as well was to run some .EXE from a floppy disk that would give me the passwords of the users on that machine that you have posted / will post somewhere.
If I could get the resources for both options that would be great. I have included my email in the email field on the ‘Leave a Reply’ form, so if you want to contact me that way, please feel free to do so. You can also use that Yahho! email address to add me to your MSN list if you have MSN. Yes, my Yahoo! mail is my MSN Passport :D.
Thanks a lot mate.

hi eric i intal one deep freeze ver 6.0 and namo of this deep freeze is faronic and i like to unistal what do it to unistall this ****in program
March 19th, 2007 at 5:09 pm
Some kids, yes, will do stupid things like download things using LimeWire, etc. Others of us are just curious, and won’t cause much damage. I wouldn’t dare do something stupid like that, I’d probably get too nervous
I did, however, have great fun finding the IP’s of the laser printers with LCD’s on their front panels, and changing the status messages
Harmless, nonetheless, but it would probably throw half the tech people in our school into a panic.. They are clueless, most of the time.. I’m a student there, and some tech people spent a couple hours trying to fix a problem on a computer, and the teacher whose computer it was asked me casually to take a look, and I fixed it within a couple minutes.. The fonts in IE were always too big in webpages.. IT diagnosed it as a bad video driver/card.. Yeah.. the text size attribute in the View menu is a bad driver..

May 11th, 2007 at 4:38 am
I am working for a computer shop, sometimes i am the technician and im using the DEEP FREEZE 5 for 5 years, and this is my problem………….. when i put the password and thawed then restart, coz i need to update all my programs, example games. After updating the games and right back the password. I must Boot Frozen then restart and after that restart one of the file currupted. The icon of deepfreeze5 was missing and did not appear. I find it that the computer didn’t did recognize the program so i reinstall the program. But the program says “Deep Freeze standard must be disabled before any install/uninstall can proceed”, but how can i uninstall the program??? if i didnt see the deepfreeze icon. I restart and Restore the computer but still the deepfreeze did not appear.
I can’t update again the games if i didn’t put the password and thawed.

I have a similar problem with no Deep freeze icon. Please respond.
June 27th, 2007 at 7:45 pm
Ei,
i’ve deleted all of the files u’ve mentioned but deep freeze 5 is still running..
August 25th, 2007 at 3:21 am
I will be writing a new and updated post as soon as I can on the newest techniques to hack deep freeze, but during the wait, here is something you should know.
In order to completely cripple Deep Freeze, you must delete the (Virtual Device Driver) located in c:\windows\system\iosubsys\persifrz.vxd
The only way to get rid of that file is to boot from say… a live cd.
Again, I’ll go into more depth in the actual post, but there is the key to get you going.

hey, was wondering if there is a way to “temperarily” disable deep freeze, the computers i work with at school are all running vista, with df , the problem is the IT dept refuses to do security updates (sp1 needed badly), and the monitor resolution is always set at 1024 x 768 instead of 1280×1024 pointless for nice 19″ lcds, right? ive submitted multiple requests to have these things changes for better efficiency/productivity but they dont see it as a “priority” to get it fixed, they basically told me they will get to it in 6-8 months…

Yes there is, as long as you know the password. In your case, your most likely not going to have that password. I realize that changing the screen resolution is a pain to do evertime, but you’ll just have to live with that.
SP1, is still being tested by most IT departments. It has been my experience working in IT, that most IT departments give a significant amount of time before running major updates to there systems.
Without knowing the password to df there is nothing you can do. I would suggest just living with it.

Help! Someone pulled a fast one on my XP O/S computer at work.
At first I couldn’t figure out what had went wrong. Basically, unable to access nothing. Neither Program Files nor the C drive….later to reallized that there was a deep freeze installed and no one seems to know why. Luckilly, I have a dual boot……once in Vista….I can freely roam the drive where XP o/s resides, but unsure where or what to delete.
Here are the systom:
No icon of Deep Freeze in the task bar to indicates that it is there.
In the PROCESSES running, I can see a DF5Serv.exe is active
So, is this a version 5 or 6 ?
I went to Faronic’s website….as instructed to use Ctrl+Shift+Alt+F6 to reveal its logon window….but that did not works.
It would be great for tips of how delete this burden. Meanwhile, I’ll try those steps and locations above as instructed.
Thanks,
Sam

I have just successfully deleted deep freeze and happy to share with everyone. My computer is now 100% fully operational.
In my case, I’ve used the 2nd boot VISTA to browse XP o/s drive which has deep freezed problem.
You must config files and folder options to unhide all operating system files and folders so you can able to get to it, and use Administrator’s rights to delete deep freeze.
Deepfreeze resides 2 areas:
1 = C:\Program Files\Faronics
2 = C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\DF518.tmp
Just delete those 2 folders (Faronics+DF518.tmp) and that should fix the problem.
Notice: I don’t even know which version of deep freeze was installed, but by looking into the running process task….it was the DF5Serv.exe is active.
So, if you have the same running process as mine, you should be able to UN-FREEZE the sucker.
By the way, if you’re not as lucky as I am having the second boot, you can always grab a piece hardware at the computer store which enable you to tap into a problematic drive……..from another computer by connecting through a usb cable. LOL

try pressing ctrl+alt+shit+F6, or if there is a deep freeze icon (looks like a white and grey circle, but if you look closer its a polar bear, if you hover with mouse it does nothing, as if it werent there…) in the lower right task bar, hold shift and double click on it. otherwise i would say it installed wrong…

@ ERIC…….It looks like that you have been attacked by installing without knowing it was a BAD workstation module of DEEP FREEZE 6…..written and distributed by some Jack_A-s-s on the net.
Once infected….you will not be able to access anywhere within your computer.
Unable to use Run command, dos, my computer, my programs, nor Run as Administrator
Not only that….even trying to use the hot key as instructed from DEEP FREEZE’s website is USELESS…Deep Freeze control panel will not appears.
The BEST WAY to get rid of it is by………
1- Remove the hard drive
2- Connect the infected hard drive to another computer as a secondary drive
Then, by using the working computer………to access the infected drive……..DELETE the Deep Freeze in 3 LOCATIONS as listed above.
1= x:\Program Files\Faronics <===In this folder you will see a module of Deep Freeze ICON = DO NOT CLICK IT…..OR YOU’LL GET BURN AGAIN.
2= x:\Documents and Settings\Hp_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\DF518.tmp <== this folder contains about 6-7 files of Deep Freeze in it.
3= x:\windows\system32\drivers\deepfrz.sys
When you are done with deleting………Turn off, remove, and put the infected hard drive back to its original host computer and start it up.
You should be fine then, but probably running kinda weird and a bit slow…CHECK and see any left over by doing some more REGISTRY CLEANING by software or manually…..while at it you should run a defrag after that.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\xxxx <== if there is any Faronic = right click and delete it.
Hope this help.
try pressing ctrl+alt+shit+F6, or if there is a deep freeze icon (looks like a white and grey circle, but if you look closer its a polar bear, if you hover with mouse it does nothing, as if it werent there…) in the lower right task bar, hold shift and double click on it. otherwise i would say it installed wrong…
Yes, it’s true what you said. I’ve learn about these HOT KEYs from a DPF guide/instructions downloaded from Faronic’s website.
But to what I had encounted was very strange. It was not a virus but worse than one. INSTRUCTIONS DID NOT HELP.
None of the little Bear icon nor the hidden DF control panel existed…….I would say my computer was basically 97% FROZEN.
No matter what trick I’ve tried….didn’t work. ………..so the only way to gain access to it ……..is when DF is INACTIVE. (access from the second OS boot or from another working computer)
My conclusion is, someone rewritten or modified DF module with an EVIL INTENTION in mind. So, watch out everyone. Don’t click that DF module unless you know it from a trusted source. Obtain a full version and make a DF installation module yourself. That way you would surelly know the password.

Another way to disable DF is replace deepfrz.sys [C:\windows\system32\drivers\deepfrz.sys] with a dummy file. This will put DF in a thaw mode. Restoring the original deepfrz.sys will activate DF. This method is great if you forget the password. If you need that dummy file. Let me know.

But if DF checks to see what files have been modified/deleted and replaces them on restart, how could that work?

To uninstall DF…
The only best way to uninstall DF cleanly is to use its installation module to uninstall it.
First you need to enter your password to unlock/unfreeze DF
Restart computer
Then RUN the DF installation module to uninstall DF.
